On the european keyboard the ± sign is made by pressing shift and ±/§ key. This key is on the left of the #1 key, above the "tab" key. This is one of the great features that has been available through the evoution of the Mac OS. In OS 9 and older there was an App called Keycaps that would show you these keystroke combinations. I miss Keycaps!
