Most of the time, Windows users are reluctant to switch to a Mac. One amongst many reasons is that they found it hard to search for free softwares/applications for the Mac. Some of them have already switched to a Mac, but they're still running Windows OS on a Mac.
It's such an irony that actually there are mountains of free Mac applications available for us. After days of working on this, I've come out with list of free and useful Mac applications.

Some articles taken from our resource base, tightly related to current article, to empower you with more knowledge on tweaking the most out of your Mac.
Another for me... http://tuppis.com/smultron/ (editor) http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner/ (uninstall application) Thank you this list is perfect :D
Best weather program for Mac, IMHO, is WeatherDock. It's beautiful to look at and it works extremely well. Weathersnitch doesn't come close. Link: http://www.alwintroost.nl/?id=52
isn't AppZapper shareware?
isn't AppZapper shareware?
Great List! PS: OverFlow and AppZapper are not free.
Oops.. Sorry for that, I've removed those applications that are not shareware.. Please check with me if there are still some sharewares included..
Audio Hijack Pro is a Shareware, not a freeware.
What a great list!! I was just wondering today about all the great apps out there that are free and are just great at what they do. Perfect timing!
Thanks Pat, it's removed now.
Vienna is great and free app for RSS and Atom. http://vienna-rss.sourceforge.net/
Awesome list. How about SuperDocker, Skitch, Poladroid :D They're all free and awesome, visit www.suberapps.com to read more about them and other awesome apps. :)
To Tomas & Ben: Added, Thanks.
You should add Plex, which is turning into an ever greater home theater program, and it is free! www.plexapp.com
Let's not forget InstantShot! and Dockdrop, two freeware programs that I use frequently. Oh...and ScreenShade.
I think MAMP is more useful (also free) than pointing people towards the MySQL site. Great list, thanks!
This is an awesome list. Exactly what I wanted.
Tnx for your great list! I think you should add one more video watch app that called Movist. It is great application almost like vlc but the best thing about it that you have much more control and Especially with subtitles that it present it with great view and not like vlc that make the sub to look bad. in conclusion i am hopping that you will take a look on this program and if i am not wrong it developed by google.
err... no vim? you have aquamacs emacs, but no vim for the vi fans! otherwise an awesome list.
In "Programming IDE" you could add Eclipse also ;)
Check out Songbird for an alternative to iTunes. It's almost out of beta, and it's outstanding. www.getsongbird.com
amazing list… thx. pretty sure to find something cool…
Great List ! There are also some interesting GTD free applications like things (so far still free) and iGTD Thanks
I think NameMangler is a much better file renaming app than NameChanger. http://www.manytricks.com/namemangler/
Interesting list, with a good few intriguing apps I've not heard of before, but … no NewsFire? It's the most attractive (and my favoured) RSS reader, and it's now free.
I don't get MacLoc. You can add the built-in Mac OS X fast user switching menu item to the menubar and from there choose the "Login Window..." menu item. Why install a program to get functionality that's already baked in?
Hi, have you tried xbmc from xbmc.org It is a multi platform media ctr and was originally the Xbox Media Ctr, I am using it and it has a great GUI
This one is still the best list, when just getting started
http://www.macnewsonline.com/wp/the-ultimate-mac-apps-list/
What about Eclipse has programming IDE?
What about Eclipse as programming IDE?
The editor category is missing MacVim (http://code.google.com/p/macvim), a great OS X port of the venerable vim text editor.
Sidenote (http://www.chatelp.org/?p=50) is a great note-taking, image-storing free app which slides out of the side of the screen. I use it every day. Also InstantShot! (http://projects.digitalwaters.net/index.php?q=ishot_download) is great for screenshots. Glad to see you've got a lot of my faves! Great list!
Wow, wonderful post. It should be the first thing one should read before switching to Mac. I will post this on my website and via Twitter. I found that I use most of them, good sign. I like free stuff:) Thanks guys!
You must like afloat. It can make any windows float over other windows
Great post, usually lists like these are mostly games. I think I will be using most of these apps
Very good list! congratulations and thanks. I am from Chile. You coul do the same with paid aplications.
Gente en la página web:
http://www.mimac.es
Hay todo esto y más y además en español para los que el inglés nos nubla la vista!
wonderful stuff for me and other designers too. Suraish Patel http://www.submyt.com
just bought my MAC and can't wait to install these!
I feel insulted that you left out MacVim from the free editor apps. Just joking, great work. Thanks for the list!
Nice and Great list!! Thanks for sharing All the best!!
WOW. THIS. IS. AMAZING. THANK. YOU.
This article is fantastic. Thank you. This is like definitive for me!
On a side note, and not to detract from the greatness of this article, Stomp is not freeware. It leaves a watermark.
Awesome list. Many programs I didn't know. One things I feel it's missing is the AppTrap uninstaller (http://konstochvanligasaker.se/apptrap/). One thing I like over other alternatives is that you don't have to do anything special to use it, it's perfectly integrated into Finder. That means that when you move an application to the Trash Bin, it shows a pop-up with the list of files that the app is leaving on the system, and you can also move them to the trash in a single click.
Filezilla now has an OS X native FTP client.
If you want Uploader Manager for Rapidshare try out this app that called "RSUploaderX". i think it is great app and moreover, i don't think that you can find any app like this for rapidshare for mac. here is it's Website http://www.fbis.ch/index-de.php?frameset=4&pagenum=50
I've heard generic advice to avoid free software because it can have viruses. What do you all think?
Great list! I would also recommend Gmail Notifr (http://ashchan.com/projects/gmail-notifr), for who needs a notifier which could be configured to check their gmail account at an interval.
You don't need GMail Nortifr, IMHO. Just configure your e-mail software program to download through Gmail's POP3. I set up my Apple Mail program to do just that and added a Smart mailbox so I know where mail was coming from. No need to use up CPU resources and RAM to do something just about any available e-mail program can do.
Great and new! Most of the sites like this one are repetitive yours isn't. Thanks for your compilation.
Here is another one: Linotype FontExplorer X.
And SideNote, Open Office, Miro, Keyboard Cleaner, Jiggler, iMedia Browser, iDMG, Fluke, Fluid, Coconut Battery, AirRadar ...
Great list, but I miss Dropbox!
Amazing article, love it, thanks you have solved lots of mac program problems with this post
This is truly funny. You are using dmg format graphic files to display icons which don't work on Firefox or IE on Windows. Are you really trying to persuade Windows users to switch to Mac using this?
Super List!
@WinLover : We're not :-p Stay on Win, buddy ;-)
great list, but MySQL is an IDE? IDE Eclipse (www.eclipse.org). With plugins, it can be used as an IDE for C, C++, python, LaTeX, HTML, etc. Text Editors MacVim (http://code.google.com/p/macvim/) thanks for the good work.
there are a thousand lists of free mac apps out there, and most of them are practically identical. this list is very comprehensive and organized and lists many great apps i ve never seen before!
What? No free video editor for QuickTime anymore? Whatever happened to MOVer? Anybody know if there's a freeware alternative to QuickTimePro? It just aggravates me, having to purchase QTPro all over again, every couple of years, when I only need it for a few simple edits.
Wrap for switching easier to your Spaces. http://www.ksuther.com/warp/
Thanks. I use most of the apps. They are in deed essengial. However, is there a ToDo app that syncs with RTM (RememberTheMilk)...? Thanks.
This is really a massive list. Thanks a ton !
Thanks Man .... So Coooooooool List
is deeper the same as tinkertool? the look the same. and is there a free app similiar to candybar?
Here is one i find useful: http://www.mamp.info/en/index.php Apache+Mysql+Php.
Ya forgot SeaShore Graphics Editor http://seashore.sourceforge.net/
Pac The Mac X (free pac man game):http://www.mcsebi.com/ptmx.php
Nice package of Mac software..... Thanks alot :)
Hello : ) Thank you for this useful list. It's great. Well, i found a very excellent "music player" sooo powerful and light APP for leopard and brothers: VOX http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24852/vox - http://www.voxapp.net/ - Happy new year ñ_ñ

Hello! Did anyone want a free alarm clock? I think I just got one by accidently and surfing internet too much... It's called Alarm Clock 2 and it's free. Here's the website to download... http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/index.html Hope some of you find this useful. Thanks!
usingmac.com was enough to have a friend of mine switched to Macintosh.
THANKS A LOT!
Hello, Great list, but SENUTI is not free anymore, now it cost 18 $ :-(
Great list, but u missed out Yahoo! Messenger: http://messenger.yahoo.com/
There is also a facebook exporter for iPhoto. really useful for people who frequently load large albums, or for lazy people (like myself) here it is: http://developers.facebook.com/iphoto/
Really nice applist! Good work Rubify!:) Here's my little tip if you've missed it!? Great for adresse sync to gmail! http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/addressbooktocsvexporter.html
Thanks for your list - I really like how pretty much every app on there is a REALLY useful one, and that you don't pile different alternatives on top of one another. As an online-research junky with a bad memory, I've been looking for an app that archives absolutely everything I view on the internet - all in files that Spotlight can search through. And when I finally found one, it was free: the MM3 WebAssistant Proxy Offline Browser. (what a name!) The only problem I have with it so far is that I can't open files it has saved directly from the finder in my browser. I'm also not sure what effect it has on performance. But if it's light-weight enough, it's exactly what I want in the age of large hard drives: a record of absolutely everything I've read and looked at online. PS: it's a java app, with a weird (by mac standards) but refreshingly simple interface and great step-by-step instructions in german-idiom-influenced english:)
Also good Stuff: Zattoo (Watching tv without tv card) SequelPro (Cocoa Mysql Editing) so long, Manuel Graf @ Apfelkuh.de
Great list, I would also recommend teamviewer.com which is free for personal use and allows to to take control of a remote PC or Mac to transfer files, help someone remotely (support), or show someone your screen for education purposes.
Linotype Font Xplorer is no longer free. They offer a 30 day trial, after which you have to purchase a $79 license. It's still superior to Font Book by leaps and bounds.
Linotype FontExplorer 1.2.3 is still free, only that it doesn't offer server integration and supports are no longer provided.
grazie assaie !!!!!
this link do not work ToolPlayer Simple Music Player for OS X that Supports FLAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, AIFF, WAV, etc
I love this list! One I think you should add though is SMC Fan Control which I think is the most important/useful app ever! Macs tend to get VERY hot and this app is very easy to use, and automatically changes the rpm you set whenever you are charging your mac or just simply using it or both! This significantly cools down your mac :) http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049
Is there a program to help organize folders and such? Because my photos are all over the place!
Hi great list. You might want to add SeaShore http://seashore.sourceforge.net/ which a simple image editor which doesn't rely on X11 as Gimp does, it is basic though. Ta
OmniWeb is now a free web browser. http://www.omnigroup.com/applications/omniweb/
Here is another file compressor for everyone. StuffIt Expander: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/stuffitexpander.html

Gracias, es un sitio confiable y recomendable!
Awesome list, thanks!!!!
There's a free stick figure animation program called Stykz, which is a cross-platform alternative to the popular Windows software Pivot Stickfigure animator. I think it is totally worthy of the list.
I installed OnyX, and wow i swear my mac is twice as fast now!
Eh, they still suck. Macs are just too limited, and there's just too little they are capable of doing. They are a very rigid machine made by a very rigid company that doesn't like other companies making software, especially free software. You don't own a Mac, Apple allows you to use a Mac.
slife is no longer free!!!!!!! does anyone know of a free alternative??
The list is wonderful! I am just looking for an email cleaner (email stripper). Can't find anything. Maybe a widget? Anyone know of any? Thanks!
amazing list very useful, ill keep it in Favorites.
Beware of Realplayer! It will make it the default player (sometimes even if you don't want it to be) and then you can't play things formatted for other players . Also is a @#$ & to get it uninstalled...
This is a sweet list. Going through them now to checkout. Also, I have a list here that are all free mac apps as well. ........ http://tinyurl.com/freemacapps
I've been using Macs on and off all my life (Sadly took a hiatus in college) and I haven't heard of many of those applications before. Thanks for the info and links, at least a few of those have come in very handy!

no its not, i had to pay for it
I am looking for a typing course does anyone know where to find one? I am quite new to all of this and believe that a good place to start would be with a good typing course I'm completely amazed by the number and the variety of free applications. !Bravo!
Great list! One thing though, MySQL isn't really an IDE, it's a database.
What about SWF & FLV Player? cool free player with movie controls, besides it saves FLV video in PRO version
Excellent information, I am new to Apple and this is just what I was looking for. Cheers!
tenk's for all
A great collection of links, thanks for taking the time. The one thing I have never found for OS X is a cursor editor or changer .... like windows has as standard. I love OS X but that silly little arrow gets lost and is a devil to find sometimes. Applications that magnify or bring the cursor to a default place on your desktop are all well and good, but, how about some clever dick making an application that will change the cursor to one YOU want, or one you make yourself ... as you can do with windows?. What a transformation that would make to OS X. Instead of an arrow we could have all manner of shaped cursors.
im looking for a app that will get rid of all the junk updates that u dont need
Clyppan : http://www.omh.cc/clyppan/ Clyppan is a free and Open Source clipboard history application for Mac OS X that’s always at your fingertips. It keeps a list of text you have copied to the clipboard and allows you to paste it again by selecting it from the list within Clyppan. FreeMind - free mind mapping software http://freemind.sourceforge.net

another MTS .files converter 3.
These are some awesome apps, but even if they cost money there are always way to get around this. easy website is www.thepiratebay.com easy website to get free apps, I got final cut pro off of it, and many others so quit complaining about having to pay.
Add iTextExpress the texteditor/word processor /light DTP application I just couldn't live without.

i really liked this thing... sharware. !! really usefull
Thanks a lot for that post!
