I've tried customizing my dock icons and I find in the end it's just too much hassle and it never looks as good. I'll just leave mine the way Apple beautifully designed it.

If you think it's too much of a hassle, you should check out candy bar. It's an application that lets you drag and drop new icons to change them. It also includes an awesome replacement set. Search CandyBar on Google to find it.
