Not long time ago (around 7-8 months), I've posted an article about How to Set Finder Background which teach you how to set custom image as your Finder background replacing the default solid white color.
Note: Don't see the cute icons, see the solid color background..
But, how if you want to set solid color as your Finder background?
You can follow these steps and I guarantee you will get your Finder background color changed.

I hadn't even thought about changing the finder background... Thanks for the tip!
sorry, but i can't find color sampled anywhere and i would really like to try that option
It's the magnifier button near the color bar, located just below the toolbar. Oh, I forgot to mention this: you need to Show items as icons to be able to change the background. :)
wendy, that tip with thumbnail preview was helpful ;-)) thank you
It appears that finder no longer provides this option. When I pull up the finder view options, there does not appear to be an option to change the background. Has this gone away with a recent update perhaps???
