Apple Remote Prank Prevention

Advertisements

Yesterday, I've a short talk with my friend who is also a MacBook owner. In the middle of the talk, he pull out his Apple remote, clicked on the menu and caused my MacBook to suddenly launch Front Row…

That prank is inevitable if you're not doing the prevention from the day you know it can happen on your Mac. Let me help you bury that kind of prank into the deep of the history…

Prevention 1: Disable Receiver

  1. Click on the Apple laying on menubar
  2. Choose System Preferences…
  3. Go under Security
  4. Move to General section
  5. Tick the appropriate checkbox, i.e. Disable remote control infrared receiver

Prevention 2: Pair Up Remote Control and Mac

  1. Click the Apple sitting on menubar
  2. Choose System Preferences…
  3. Go under Security
  4. Move to General section
  5. Hit the button Pair and do the synchronization
  6. Thereafter, Front Row can be activated by using only that particular Apple Remote

Tommi points out a simplest method to pair up with Apple Remote:

Just press Menu+Play on your Remote for some seconds until the Pairing-"Logo" is shown on your Mac .. et voilá, your Remote and Mac are paired in one little step.

Thanks for the info!

Those preventions are more than enough to hush those Apple Remote pranksters, I assume.

Why so complicated?

Prevention 1 isn't necessary and Prevention 2 can be done in one step... just press Menu+Play on your Remote for some seconds until the Pairing-"Logo" is shown on your Mac .. et voilá, your Remote and Mac are paired in one little step.

Thanks for the info, Tommi. I've updated the article.

If you pair your remote to your MacBook, can it still prank other MacBooks that haven't protected themselves?
