Talking about mp3 songs, one application should instantly crawl inside our mind: iTunes. Yes, today I will share with you how to trim your mp3 songs with iTunes.

As usual, first step you will need to open iTunes and then followed by:

  1. Select mp3 song you want to trim
  2. Open contextual menu and click on Get Info
  3. Go to Options tab
  4. Inside you can see Start Time and Stop Time.
Fill it with the wanted start time and stop time of that mp3 song after trimming
  5. Now select the song again, open the contextual menu and choose Create MP3 Version
  6. Last step is to wait for the process to finish

Thanks for the tip!

Let me add some more: Some people may find "Create AAC version" in the contextual menu. This depends on the "Import Settings" you set in iTunes preferences

To set the output audio quality, Go to iTunes Preferences.. > General > Import Settings
there you'll find choices of encoder and compression quality.

I personally use AAC Encoder with iTunes Plus quality (256Kbps VBR equiv.) when ripping CDs.

I like to use mp3 instead of aac. Just about anything will take an mp3. it is just so universal.

Or ... using this technique you can make your own iPhone ringtones !

* ctrl-click your selected mp3 song -> convert to AAC
* set your Start/Stop time (no longer then 30s !!!)
* export (eg) to the desktop
* rename file.m4a to file.m4r and import to iTunes

Then look under the ringtones section where it should be located (fragment longer then 30s are NOT recognized !).

enjoy,
d.

Thanks for this Trick.

This is perfect.
I'd been trying to find a way to trim songs for months....but wasn't able to find anything on any of the websites.

To be fair, this doesn't actually trim the file, just tells iTunes when to start and stop playing. I used to have an app which would actually split and discard portions of mp3 files - now lost and I can't remember the name. Anyone know?

Very interesting. I just started using iTunes a few months ago (yes I'm behind the times just a little bit in that arena) and had no idea that you could do something like this. It's turning out to be one my favorite music toys of all time!
