Custom Exposé Glows for Download

In our previous article: Daily Trick 47. Tweak Exposé Glow, we have brought forward the option to change your Exposé glowing effect. After few minutes playing around with the image sprite, I have come up with these various sprites.

In this article, I'd like to share the sprite with you. You can refer to the previous daily trick for the step by step guide on how to change the effect.

Daily Trick 16. Stream Download Video

If you have followed UsingMac articles for quite some time, I believe that we all have known how to download YouTube video easily even in HD quality.

For large videos, however, we will need to wait several tens of minutes before we can open the video. Hey, why don't we just stream download it? Like what we did while watching the video on YouTube?

If you want to stream download it, follow these steps:

  1. I assume that the video download process is already begun and you can see it in the Download Activity (Safari: Cmd-Opt-L; Firefox: Cmd-J)
  2. Now Ctrl-Click on the download item (the video) and choose Show in Finder
  3. The filename will be shown with format .download, you can't open it
  4. Ctrl-Click on it and select Show Package Contents
  5. Inside you can see the file with video format .mp4
  6. Run it and you've successfully stream download the video

This trick works well for downloading video from YouTube. I haven't tested it for other video sites.

Download Media Files with Least Effort

More and more stuffs of people interest flowing around the web, people are starting to seek and download those stuffs. However, most of the time the permalink to the storage place are unavailable, especially for media files.

Instead of wasting time searching from Google, smashing the web or even begging the creator of the file, it'll take the least of your effort by using the following tricks which perfectly work on Safari (such as downloading YouTube Video for free) and Firefox.

Safari Web Browser

  1. Open Activity Window
    In order to open activity window, you can use the paths Safari: Window ▸ Activity (keystrokes: Command-Option-A).
  2. Recognizing the File
    You will see a whole bunch of files displayed inside the pane. Hopefully, movie files stand out of the crowd as those kind of files usually appear in big file size.
  3. Cast the Magic
    So, the file you want to download has been spotted. Use this trick: Option-DoubleClick on the file name. The file will be downloaded and put into your Downloads folder.
    You don't need to rename the file you've just downloaded. Right after the downloading process is finished, the file is ready to be used.

It's quite different for Firefox…
